Overview
If you forget to renew your domain, it will eventually expire. When a domain expires, the website and email services associated with it may cease to function. This article explains what happens after expiration.
Immediate effects after expiration
- Your website may go offline.
- Email addresses using that domain may stop receiving and sending messages.
- Nameservers may stop functioning depending on the TLD rules.
Grace Period (0–30 days, varies by TLD)
- Most domains enter a Grace Period after expiration.
- You can renew the domain at the regular renewal price.
- No penalties or extra fees during this period.
Redemption Period (usually days 30–60)
- If the domain is not renewed during the Grace Period, it may enter Redemption.
- Redemption costs are higher because the registry charges additional recovery fees.
Pending Delete (last 5 days)
- If you don’t restore the domain from Redemption, it will enter the Pending Delete state.
- At this stage, you cannot recover the domain.
- After deletion, the domain becomes available for anyone to register.
Can my domain be lost?
Yes. If you do not renew or restore it in time, the domain can be registered by someone else, and recovery is impossible.
How to prevent expiration
- Enable Auto-Renew.
- Keep your payment method up to date.
- Check renewal emails sent from VexoWeb.
